Atlanta Business Radio Special…Global Learning Initiative at Mount Vernon Presbyterian School

Today we dedicated the entire show to put a spotlight on Mount Vernon Presbyterian School (MVPS). They decided to launch a Global Learning Initiative beginning with the 2009-2010 school year. The idea behind the initiative was to give MVPS Middle and Upper School students the opportunity to study an issue that would have a profound impact on their future lives and the global society, and to do so in a manner that was outside the traditional boundaries of the classroom. MVPS wanted to initiate a tradition that the rising senior class would choose the topic of the year-long study. For the initial 2009-2010 initiative the seniors chose The Global Environment as the topic and the year-long study was successfully completed. In the studio we had Brett Jacobsen, Donald Sasso, Addie Placido and Miles Mallory from MVPS as well as Susan McBreairty from the CDC.

For the second Global Learning Initiative for the coming 2010-2011 school year the seniors chose Global Infectious Disease as the topic. MVPS will be partnering with the Centers for Disease Control in this study. This is a first of its kind collaboration for the CDC. MVPS is the first school to have a year long educational program in partnership with the Centers for Disease Control.

CDC experts who are involved worldwide will be visiting MVPS to speak to and dialogue with students on a variety of different topic s concerning global infectious disease. Since CDC also partners with The Carter Center and Emory University, these institutions may join this initiative by providing speakers. MVPS is looking forward to this cooperative effort involving world class institutions located here in Atlanta. To learn more about Mount Vernon Presbyterian School please go to their website www.mountvernonschool.org
