Today we had on three leaders working with women suffering from Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS).

Christine DeZarn is the Founder of the Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome Association, Inc. (www.PCOSupport.org), a Christine DeZarnnational non-profit organization formed in 1997.  After self-diagnosing and later confirming her own case of PCOS in the mid-1990’s, Christine noticed that there was a profound lack of patient-focused information available.  At the same time, patients were not being readily diagnosed with PCOS despite presentation of classic symptoms.  With a grass-roots volunteer staff, PCOSupport delivered both patient-focused and doctor-focused educational programs and online resources to fill the information gap.  Through print, radio and television media outreach, including an appearance on NBC”s Dateline, Christine served as a spokesperson for PCOS awareness.  Today, Christine is a proponent of the belief that PCOS is an “early warning system” that can benefit women by signaling their need for lifestyle change to prevent serious illness, and to extend lifespan.  At the same time, she leads efforts to address the many quality-of-life issues brought about by PCOS, and the condition’s “attack on femininity” that can be devastating to a woman’s self-image.  She advocates for the comprehensive treatment of PCOS at the fundamental level, addressing serious health issues, with simultaneous symptomatic treatment to achieve the highest possible quality-of-life.  Christine currently represents the PCOS patient community for the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services “healthfinder.gov”, and participates in a variety of medical society committee work.  Christine lives in Atlanta, Georgia, with her infant son Preston, born in December 2008.

Evelina Weidman Sterling, PhD, MPH, CHES is a public health educator and researcher specializing in reproductive and women’s health issues.  She is a best-selling and award winning author of several consumer health books focusing on fertility-related issues, including Living with PCOS, Having Your Baby through Egg Donation, Budgeting for Infertility:  How to Bring Home a Baby without Breaking the Bank, and Before Your Time:  The Guide to Living Well with Early Menopause.  Dr. Sterling is the co-founder and CEO of My Fertility Plan, an innovative consulting firmed aimed at providing action-oriented information and educational resources to help patients overcome their infertility and build their families.  Dr. Sterling also serves as the acting Executive Director of Rachel’s Well, a women’s health non-profit organization addressing menstrual health and ovarian insufficiency, as well as Vice President of Strategy and Marketing for the ultimate fertility web portal www.FertilityAuthority.com. To learn more about what she is up to and all her books please go to her website www.myfertilityplan.com

Dr. Mark Perloe earned his medical degree from Pennsylvania State University, Hershey Medical Center, and served his residency in obstetrics and gynecology at the University of Wisconsin. Dr. Perloe completed his fellowship in reproductive endocrinology and infertility at the University of Minnesota.

He is a clinical assistant professor in obstetrics and gynecology at the Medical College of Georgia.

As Medical Director at GRS, Dr. Perloe has expertise in treating conditions related to infertility including polycystic ovary syndrome, recurrent pregnancy loss, endometriosis, menstrual disorders, fibroids, male fertility problems and endocrine and other reproductive health problems. He also has extensive experience in in vitro fertilization, and using the latest microsurgical techniques for reversing tubal sterilization. His research interests include new tests for the diagnosis of recurrent pregnancy loss, in vitro maturation and minimal stimulation IVF.

Dr. Perloe has conducted and published research in medical journals including Obstetrics & Gynecology, Southern Medical Journal, Human Reproduction and the International Journal of Obstetrics and Gynecology. In 1986, he co-authored Miracle Babies and Other Happy Endings for Couples with Fertility Problems. He is a frequent speaker at international medical conferences, and is active as an advisory board member for INCIID, OBGYN.net and the Endometriosis Association. He serves as the Reproductive Health expert for RevolutionHealth.com

Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is the most common endocrine disorder in women, affecting an estimated five to ten million women of reproductive age. For women trying to conceive a child, PCOS is a serious, common cause of infertility – nearly half of all female factor infertility cases can be traced to PCOS. New medical insight into the disease has led to treatment options, including insulin-reducing ovulation medication (clomiphene, glucophage, Metformin), dietary changes (low glycemic diet) and surgery (ovarian drilling), which have proven successful and allow many women to overcome PCOS and conceive a child naturally, while reducing the risk of miscarriage. Women who undergo treatment for PCOS but are still unable to conceive naturally often turn to assisted reproductive technologies, including IVF and experience high pregnancy success rates. To learn more about Dr Perloe and his practice please go to www.ivf.com
